Australia’s DJs are capturing the true Aussie spirit with the upcoming Dance AID charity events.
The explosive electro events will raise vital funds for Queensland flood victims and everyone involved be having a damn good time for a unbelievably important cause.
Soon after the floods wreaked havoc on Queensland earlier this week, Novanation presenter and DJ Grant Smillie rounded up his troops and announced Dance AID – a Melbourne-based charity event featuring some of the biggest names electro Down Under.
With artists like Smillie, Zoe Badwi, The Potbellez, Kaz James, Nervo Twins and Ruby Rose on the bill, demand to support this event grew so quickly that it’s now been expanded into a national tour.
Smillie said all of the DJs involved viewed this as the perfect way to help Aussies in need.
“In Australia we all know someone who knows somebody. It’s on our doorstep. It’s been awful to watch… and I certainly didn’t believe it when I first saw it,” he said.
“It started out being just a Melbourne thing. I rang up Ruby straight away and then the Stafford Brothers because they’re Queensland boys. The Nervo girls emailed me saying can they do something, and then it just snowballed,” he said.
“To get The Potbelleeez and Hook N Sling – and with everyone flying themselves to Melbourne – I was like ‘Wow, this is pretty amazing, us rallying together.’ So we thought ‘let’s make this national’ because if everyone commits to one event, we can really make some serious noise and have an impact.”
Smillie said within no time, lighting and stage staff from across the country were putting their hands up to help, and equipment and liquor companies were also pitching in products.
“It’s been amazing. It’s just become all-consuming but equally something that’s just got a really good organic feel about it. No-one’s trying to cash in on it. Everyone’s asking to do stuff for free.”
In addition to the upcoming club events, Dance AID will also be putting out a CD featuring tracks from the artists involved as well as major internationals like David Guetta and Axwell. The compilation CD will feature special edits by most of the artists and an acoustic track from Badwi.
“We started out saying if we could raise $10,000 that would be awesome. Then $40,000 would be great. But given that we’re doing a national roll out, my aim is to be well above $50,000. $50,000 to $100,000 after we get CD sales,” he said.
“Even though I guess it is a somber occasion we’re trying to make these events some of the best parties they’ll ever remember. I don’t think you’ll ever see a time when you have me, Ruby, Kaz James, and Zoe at the same time, all on the decks. You won’t ever see that again.”
